– Volcano Mt. Ontake erupted almost without any geological omens. As of today 47 people are confirmed dead at the area around its peak. Shot-out stones and hot gasses were the most reason of victims.
– Politician Doi Takako passed away at age 84. Doi was one of the top profiles of Socialist Party (now Social Democratic Party) in late 20th century, that had been the second largest political party in Japanese Diets at that time. She was the speaker of the Lower Diet in Hosokawa Morihiro’s anti-Liberal Democratic Party coalition government. She was elected as the leader of her party from 1996 to 2003, but in her time the party’s political influences rapidly diminished.
