How Lump-sum pension refund changes for pension reform
On June 13 of 2025, pension reform laws were approved at Japanese Diets. Japanese pension systems are basically revised every 5 years.
Japanese government is now being in the process of their official proclamation. Within 4 years after official proclamation, the following reform is to be implemented.
When official proclamation is done we will upload our report on this blog.
Back to when income tax refunds permitted? (ver. Year 2026)
You can claim income tax refunds for salaries you had received in Japan for past 5 years.

By when do you need to claim Japanese pension refunds
Non-Japanese persons are permitted to claim their pension refunds (Lump-sum Withdrawal Payments) within 2 years after “you do not have an address in Japan”.
In Japanese resident registration system all residents who are going to move out of Japan shall submit Moving-out
How long does it take to receive Japanese pension refund?
3-4 months at minimum but possibly longer

Kosei Nenkin (厚生年金, こうせいねんきん) covers people who are employed by companies.
Is it OK to select a favorable currency for your pension refund?
Each country has a designated currency for international transfer, that cannot be changed
Japanese pension refunds (Lump-sum Withdrawal Payments) are transferred internationally via Mitsubishi UFJ bank on behalf of the government. Each country has a designated currency for transfers from Japan, that cannot be changed.

Fill forms and send them to our office
After you agree with our service and fee we will send you a set of necessary forms and guidance. Please fill and send them to our office. We will request you to show us documents to prove your tax amount (Gensen Choshu-hyo, Notice of Lump-sum Withdrawal Payments, etc).
Claim after you leave Japan to Japan Pension Service
If we get a query from the tax office about your claim, we will forward it to you quickly and try giving the tax office our feedback ASAP.
Payment
In average it takes around 1-3 months from claim to payment.

Claim after you leave Japan to Japan Pension Service
If we get a query from Japan Pension Service about you claim, we will forward it to you quickly and try giving JPS our feedback ASAP.
Payment
In average it takes around 3-5 months from claim to payment, if no query from Japan Pension Service.
We will deduct our fee after your pension and tax refunds are realized and sent to your account.
We don’t need you to transfer any advance fees.
There are some cases in that all payments are transferred to you directly. For that case or other consulting service we will request you to transfer our fee directly.
